Tips for DVJ
How to Make a Career in Music?
DVJ or
DVD jockey is a professional who uses the audio/video mixing application known
as VDJ (Virtual DJ) from Atomix
Productions Inc. which is used by club and mobile DJs. As a DVD jockey, your
job is to perform or compose live with the use of an audio-visual music player
rather than only an audio system which only comprises of vinyl-record or CD
turntables.
Stay updated
It is essential to get
as much knowledge as possible about DJs, how they work and use their
equipments. You can check the different forums and stay continuously updated
regarding the happenings in the world of DJs. You can also spend some time over
the web and check out video tutorials regarding how DJs work and the tricks, techniques
and tips they use.
Get familiar with the tools
If you wish to be a DVJ, you have to familiarize yourself
with some of the basics. You should have good knowledge of music and have the
ability to read the mind of a live audience and entertain the members. You will
of course also require knowledge of handling the music equipments. You have to
get the basic equipments, such as professional CD players or turntables, a
mixer, amplified speakers and professional headphones which would not get
sounds distorted even on higher volumes. You can get more equipment at a later
stage, when you get more advanced knowledge in mixing.
Practice on other’s equipments
Before actually
investing on music equipments, you should better arrange mixing on tools used
by somebody else. This will help you to get a hang of how things work and know
the things that you exactly require as a DVJ.
You will have to know how to beatmatch or correspond the bass beats between the
next song and the current song. This will need lots of practice and you can try
out advanced tricks such as backspinning or scratching once you get knowledge
of the basics.
Get a good laptop
Laptops are being increasingly used by DJs in order to do the mixing. You will have to go for a good brand while choosing a laptop. A superior brand will ensure no crashes occurring during gigs. You should also get an USB sound card. Although you can get dedicated applications, you will generally need to use demo versions and upgrade to a pro version if you wish to use every feature available in the program.
